JSR comments on hesitance for black baptism and black membership prohibition.
"Latter-day Saints," Trenton Evening Times, February 4, 1885, 2
When [James S.] Russell was asked if negroes were admitted to their church [he] said: "No, God never makes a revelation to negroes. All of our members are expected to preach, if necessary; but one to whom no revelation comes cannot preach. We baptize the negro when he asks it, but that does not entitle him to membership with the Saints." This doctrine will make Mormonism popular with certain of our citizens with "Ariel" stripe.
