James Bridger and Louis Vazquez comment on indigenous difficulties in Southern settlements.
James Bridger and Louis Vazquez, Letter to Brigham Young, April 7, 1849, Brigham Young Office Files
We would not advise you to send a small number of families this spring on account of the Indians being badly disposed toward the Whites, for it appears that they have been fighting with sum Americans in the direction of Taos, and there has been some of them kild, and to mend the matter, you have kild four this spring. Last October Mr. Bridger was at the Manta for the purpose of staying the winter with them then conduct allarmed him so that he had to return to this place to winter so sir if you send have a forces sufishant to stand against the Taos, Yampa, and Wanta Youta, but we don't think the scope of cultivable land his not extensive eno[ugh] for a large settlement.
