Reed C. Durham argues that Freemasonry deeply influenced Joseph's life.
"Reed C. Durham, Jr.'s Astounding Research on the Masonic Influence on Mormonism, with an introduction and notes by Mervin B. Hogan of the Utah Masonic Lodge," Mormon Miscellaneous (October 1975): 12
I have attempted to demonstrate that Masonic influences upon Joseph in the early Church history, preceding his formal membership in Masonry, were significant. However, these same Masonic influences exerted a more dominant character as reflected in the further expansion of the Church subsequent to the Prophet's Masonic membership. In fact, I believe that there are few significant developments in the Church that occurred after March 15, 1842, which did not have some Masonic influence.
