propos’d that the Society go into a close examination of every candidate— that they were going too fast— that the Society should grow up by degrees.

After the surge of membership petitioners in December 1841, Joseph Smith sought to restrain the enthusiasm into the sacred orders of temple ordinances and sacred societies (e.g., the Relief Society). He instructed the Relief Society that they should grow "by degrees" which is similar to the language used in Freemasonry.
