. . ., yet he stood unscathed, with the exception of a ball which took away the tip end of the lower part of his left ear; which fulfilled literally a prophecy which Joseph made about four months <​over a year​> previously, that the time would come that the balls would fly around him like hail, and he should see his friends fall on the right and on the left, but that there should not be a hole in his robe <​garment​> if he would continue to wear them

The following is copied from the Times and Seasons: “Two minutes (T. & S. 598) Richards”.

While Willard Richards and John Taylor were in the cell, a company of the mob again rushed up stairs, but finding only the dead body of Hyrum, they were again descending the stairs, when a loud cry was heard “the Mormons are coming!” which caused the whole band of murderers to flee precipitately to the woods.
