Worthy Couple Married 66 years

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel D. Chambers

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel D. Chambers celebrated their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary at their home on Seventeenth East and Thirty-third South Monday evening, May 5. Dinner was served to 47 relatives and friends including a grandson, his wife and two children, of Ogden The elderly couple was presented with a number of beautiful floral tributes, their favorite hymns were rendered and readings were given by Mrs. Henrietta L. Bankhead and Mrs. A. L. Howell.

Mr. Chambers was born in Pickins county, Alabama, May 21, 1931, the son of James Davidson and Hester Gillespie. When three years of age his master moved to Knobby county, Miss., where the boy became a member of the "Mormon" Church when 13 years old. Because of the cruel practice of slavery his first wife and two children were taken from him and removed to Texas. On May 4, 1858, he married Amanda Leggroan, daughter of Green and Hetta Leggroan.

When the Civil war broke out and they were freed from slavery by the Emancipation Proclamation he followed the trade of shoemaker, and at the close of the war in 1865 he commenced farming.

They left the States for Utah in April 1870, arriving in Salt Lake City, April 27, and locating in the Eighth ward, where they lived a number of years. From here they moved to Wilford, then a part of Mill Creek ward. Through his natural ability as a business man Mr. Chambers has succeeded in accumulating a comfortable fortune. He was a progressive farmer and seemed to have the ability of making the soil produce its fullest abundance.

He has donated liberally towards the erection of the ward, chapel and amusement hall, in his home ward, and has been faithful in attending his Church duties. He is a man of sterling honesty and a good citizen and neighbor.

Mrs. Chambers has ever been willing an dread to help those in distress and has worked hard in assisting her husband to beautify their surroundings.
