Heber J. Grant reports the decision was made to have B. H. Roberts serve as mission president.
Heber J. Grant, Journal, April 14, 1922, MS 1233, CHL
Brother McCune was voted for in our meeting yesterday, to be sustained as President of the proposed California Stake when it is organized, and the Brethren were all pleased with the idea of Brother Roberts succeeding Brother McCune, and the general concensus of opinion was that it would be far better for Brother Roberts to preside over the Eastern States Mission than to be made the Editor of the News. It was thought that to edit the Deseret News would be a strenuous task for Brother Roberts, as there would be such a heavy daily grind upon him.
