Elder Howard W. Hunter, of the Council of the Twelve, has been named as Church historian by the First Presidency, succeeding President Joseph Fielding Smith who served as historian since 1921. . . . President Smith served as Church historian for 49 years longer than any of the other 15 historians to serve since the Church was organized in 1830. He was sustained as Church historian and general Church recorder on March 17, 1921, at the age of 44.
