November 7, 1967, First Presidency meeting. President [N. Eldon] Tanner reported that arrangements have been made to receive the Book of Abraham papyri from the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York on Monday, November 27. President Tanner said that they are attempting to keep the matter quiet until that time when they will arrange for the press to have representatives present. President Tanner will go to New York with Dr. [Aziz S.] Atiya of the University of Utah on Monday, November 27, to receive the papyri.
The question was raised as to where these papyri should be placed, and President Tanner suggested that for the time being at least, they be placed at the Brigham Young University in Provo, where they could be in safekeeping or in the vault in Little Cottonwood Canyon, although he thought it would be preferable to have them at the BYU.
It was agreed that the Book of Abraham manuscript should be placed with the Brigham Young University. . . .
Later, at the meeting of the First Presidency held Tuesday, November 28, 1967, it was decided to place these papyri in the vault in the Church Historian's Office.
