Fatma Abdel-Raouf and Patricia M. Buhler explain the adjusted and unadjusted gender wage gap.
Fatma Abdel-Raouf and Patricia M. Buhler, The Gender Pay Gap: Understanding the Numbers (New York: Routledge, 2020), 61
The uncontrolled, which is also known as unadjusted or raw, gender pay gap compares the median (or mean) earnings of men and women in general without taking into consideration variables such as hours worked, level of education, type of job, industry, and other demographics. Using the median weekly earnings of full-time, year-round (FTYR) workers in 2018, the gender pay gap is 20%. This 20% gap is the uncontrolled gap which does not account for differences between men and women such as working hours, job title, level of education, … etc. That’s addressed with the controlled gender pay gap. This is done using statistical techniques to control for such variables to better reflect the true gender pay gap.
