Like any ritual, however, it can be misunderstood. Instead of understanding it as an invitation to repent and receive the heavenly gift, it can be twisted to constitute the heavenly gift itself. When it becomes a substitute for actually receiving the heavenly gift offered by the Lord, it can make those who participate think they are better than others who cannot. This potential abuse allows those who are misled to display the same foolishness we see in the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Book of Mormon. Nephi prophesied this would happen among the latter-day gentiles. The result of this error is always the passing of the heavenly gift from among mankind. Until the dormant power is reignited again by His sheep, who hear His voice in the rites and ordinances. Then the light is rekindled in the still smoldering invitation restored through Joseph Smith.
