More specifically, the ancient association of the symbols of the compass and the square in altar cloths, clothing, and temple veils has been found not only in Jewish, Christian, and other sources from the ancient Near East, but also in unexpected places such as China. ... In modern Latter-day Saint temples, the coming together of the circle and the square is often represented visually by a concentric circle and square. In Masonry, a similar lesson about the path to perfection is taught by varying the relative placement of the points of the compass to the square as the Candidate progresses through the first three degrees.
