The expansive mind of Daniel was capable of dealing not only with local matters with universal ones too. Included in his broad visions was one of the Messiah. He says:

I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Jesus must have regarded this prophecy as referring to Himself for when the High Priest of His day asked Him if He were the Christ. He replied:

I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Teachings respecting the coming of the Messiah were of course well known to the Jews of Jesus’ day. The book of Daniel was no doubt used by them to illustrate this doctrine.
