Adam and Our Relationship to Him

Chapter 1 establishes the fact that there was more than one God involved in the Creation, that the world where God lived during the Creation hovered just above the earth at the time, and that Adam was the first man on the earth.

“This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him. Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created” (Genesis 5:1-2, KJV).

Adam means "the father of all living," and God gave everyone His own name like a father here on the earth gives his children his name. Eve means "the mother of all living."

"And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living" (Genesis 3:20, KJV).

The Mormons, once again, shed more light on Adam and Adam as the Father of all living.

And also with Michael, or Adam, the father of all, the prince of all, the ancient of days. (Doctrine and Covenants, section 27:11)

And it came to pass that Moses called upon God, saying: Tell me, I pray thee, why these things are so, and by that thou madest them? And behold, the glory of the Lord was upon Moses, so that Moses stood in the presence of God, and talked with him face to face. And the Lord God said unto Moses: For mine own purpose have I made these things. Here is wisdom and it remaineth in me. And by the word of my power, have I created them, which is mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth. And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purposes; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten. And the first man of all men have I called Adam, which is many. But only an account of this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, give I unto you. For behold, there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man; but all things are numbered unto me, for they are mine and I know them. . . . For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. (Moses 1;30-35, 39, Pearl of Great Price)

As a young man growing up, I was taught in church that I was a child of God, and I had a hard time for many years understanding just how that could be. I have a sister named Sharon, who had been very diligent in searching out and tracing our family’s genealogy. She accomplished that through my grandmother Roger’s line all the way back to Adam. Since all people must come from Adam, as He is the first man and Eve is the first woman, you may ask, “How is it that you are able to go that far back?” The key is first getting back to someone in the Bible, and then it is much easier as the genealogy of ancients is recorded there. My family tree ends at Adam and Even and cannot go back any further, so how can we be the children of God?

I am sure Adam was placed here on the earth from the world where the gods dwell as the Bible records. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in their Pearl of Great Price in the book of Abraham, makes reference to the place where the Gods well, a planet near unto Kolob. They even have a hymn about this in their songbooks. The mythical name is Mount Olympus. Actually, “Adam” is an office or title of God; and when beginning the continuation of His family, He personally—with His wife, Eve—starts another earthly family, just as we mortals begin our families. Adam and Eve have families without end on worlds without end because that is the work and glory of God, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. “God who are sundry times and divers manners spake in times past unto the fathers by prophets. Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1-3, KJV). The Mormons once again, through Joseph Smith have answered this question, which supports the Bible entirely. “That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (Doctrine and Covenants 76:24). Thus, we are literal children of God, and the identity of God is staring us right in the face: “The spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16, KJV).

So this is how it works: Adam/God, with His Son, Jesus Christ, created every living thing in the spirit before it was placed on the earth (Genesis 2:4-5, KJV). Adam/God, with His Son, Jesus Christ, then created this world on which all living things might dwell. His greatest interest and the subject of His glory is the immortality and eternal life of man.

Adam/God not only is the Creator of our spirits but also left His throne in Heaven and came to the earth, assuming the title of Adam to also be our Father in the flesh, same as He has always done, worlds without end. He symbolically partook with Eve of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He, Adam/God, fell so that man might be and might have mortal bodies and gain earthly experiences. The plain also had to include a way to get away from the devil’s jurisdiction after a probationary period. The plan included the need for us now, as humans, to die to return to the presence of our Father/Adam. However, the point of us all coming to the earth from the world of spirits was to test us, to see if we would do the will of our Father/Adam.
