The “Peaceful Maya” Myth

It wasn’t that long ago when the popular literature tended to paint the Maya as a peace-loving and noble culture while pigeonholing the Aztec and Toltec as bloodthirsty warmongers who performed human sacrifices on a nearly daily basis. That misrepresentation of the Maya is not being promoted as it was earlier. We now have archaeological proof that the Maya had a society based on war and the taking of prisoners-of-war for sacrifice ever since their early beginnings. They also sacrificed children and animals and performed self-mutilation to please their gods.
